Flamm was a former newspaper reporter and the author of two books on San Francisco history, Good Life in Hard Times and Hometown San Francisco. He also served in a number of positions in San Francisco city government, including press secretary.
He attended Lowell High School and San Francisco Junior College, and graduated from the University of California - Berkeley.
